Recover faster: eat blueberries

Athletes who eat blueberries recover faster from exercise, according to a study published in the Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition.  The New Zealand research found that eating blueberries raised the level of antioxidants in the blood which may have led to an improved rate of recovery.

The actual reasons why blueberries do this is unclear, although research leader, a=Associate Professor Steve Stannard of Massy School of Soort and Exercise explained, 'It is probably linked to the superior anthocyanin content of the Ne Zealand Blueberry fruit'.

It's official: unhealthy lifestyle may reduce productivity

A study published at the end of last year has found leading an unhealthy lifestyle may reduce your productivity at work.  No surprise here but always good to have more evidence.  The study of 19,803 employees, published in Population Health Management Journal, found workers who exercised only occasionally were 50% more likely to have lower levels of productivity than regular exercisers.  Workers with an unhealthy diet were 66% more likely to see productivity drop than those who ate whole grains, fruit and vegetables, and smokers were likely to see productivity drop 28% compared to those who don't smoke.

Keep muscles strong through the ages: eat fish oil

It's renowned for being food for heart health but researchers at the University of Aberdeen suggest taking a fish oil supplement in combination with regular workouts is also the key to helping ageing muscles stay strong.  Lead scientist Dr Stuart Gray says a pilot study showed the anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oils counteract the natural effects of age-related muscle loss from the body.

Office Meditation

We like to keep you up to date with the latest research from the world of wellbeing so that you can share this with your colleagues or use it to help you design the most effective corporate wellness programme.

The thoughts your employees allow to inhabit their heads determine everything they do but researchers have shown that some 95% of our thoughts are repetitive, and 80% negative. This is most likely due to our survival instinct, which keeps us looking over our shoulder for threats. Negative thoughts may even make us do things we know we shouldn’t, such as over-eat, skipping the gym or making bad decisions at work.

One of the ways that we’ve found most effective to help people think differently is with a few simple meditation exercises. Suggest that staff try the following a couple of times a week to begin with and see how it affects their thinking.  Remember that calming the mind may take practice but it’s an invaluable skill to have.  Clearing the head by focusing on the now will always make you more productive later.

Sit comfortably in a quiet space. You still have thoughts, but they are more like observations. Narrate less. Listen more.  Keep breathing, slower and more fully each time, until you feel a sense of stillness.  Melt further into the lazy indulgence of letting yourself be. Only existing in the present moment.

Food for Thought

We like to keep you up to date with the latest research from the world of wellbeing so that you can share this with your colleagues or use it to help you design the most effective corporate wellness programme.

The food that staff eat affects their ability to perform in all areas.  Most people know the theory of healthy eating but struggle with the practice, often due to a busy schedule.  They also often simple get stuck for ideas.   One thing that is useful – and fairly easy to do – is to add tofu to the schedule.  It’s a great source of unsaturated fats and a study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that eating these fats post-exercise boosts blood flow by up to 45 per cent.  So encourage tofu at lunchtime if you want people firing on all cylinders with creative solutions through the afternoon.

A Guide to Outsourcing Your Wellness Programme

To develop the best wellness programme possible for your organisation, seeking external input can be invaluable.  Here are some key points to consider when looking for wellness providers.

Be clear on what you are looking for
You’ll either be at the stage where you have a clear idea of what you want from your wellness programme and you’re looking for someone to help you deliver on the plan, or you may have simply had initial thoughts on what you’re looking for and you require some creative input into what will work best for your organization.

Some providers are best positioned to bring your existing ideas to life quickly by providing you with resources you don’t have access to and enabling you to tap into their tried and tested systems.   Others adopt a more consultative approach and will help you take a strategic view of how a wellness programme could develop within your organization over time.  It’s important to decide which approach suits you best in the early stages of selecting providers.

What level of input do you require?
You need to decide what kind of wellness initiatives you are looking to set up and how much you want to be involved in the ongoing servicing and development of these initiatives.  Do you want a supplier that, once appointed, will simply report back to you on a regular basis with a review of how the initiatives are progressing, or do you want to actively manage your initiatives more closely in order that you can review and refine your approach quickly and efficiently?

Do you want a provider that will act as a virtual wellness department for your business leaving you free to focus on other priorities, or do you want retain a more hands on approach?

Do your research
When it comes to checking out potential providers you need to be diligent in your research.  Be patient when making your decision as this could save a lot of time further down the line:

  • What experience do your potential suppliers have?
  • Are they regularly delivering the kind of services you’re looking for?
  • What do their current clients say about the work they do?
  • Do they have experience in your business sector?
  • Can they demonstrate a track record of delivering the results you’re looking for with your wellness programme?

Interview thoroughly
Personalities are important.  You need to be able to trust your provider to deliver the right services at the right time; you’re looking for someone to make your life easier after all.  Shop around and decide if you’re looking for a one-stop shop single provider for a variety of services or if you need to research the best supplier for each component part of your strategy.

Quiz potential providers thoroughly on how they would apply their knowledge and experience to add value to your wellness programme.  Listen out for key questions they should be asking you during the interview process.  Your provider should be curious about your overall strategy for wellbeing and how they fit into the plans for the short, medium and long-term.

Who will go the extra mile?
You should be convinced that your provider not only has thorough relevant knowledge and experience, but that they understand or have the potential to understand your organization.  The best providers are able to quickly get to grips with the personality of a business as this understanding helps enormously with the delivery of wellness messages.

A provider that can help you deliver the most effective wellness initiatives and ensure these are communicated clearly in a manner that will engage and motivate your staff will guarantee your wellness programme is a success, so don’t settle for anything less in your choice of who to appoint to assist you with this vital area of your business.
